Shop by Room: How to Style Every Space in Your Home

There's a particular kind of satisfaction that comes from walking into a room that just feels right. Not perfect in a showroom sense — but considered. Layered. Like someone actually thought about how the light falls in the evening, or what it feels like to sit there with a cup of coffee on a Sunday morning.

That's the idea behind the way we've organized our collection at Dwelly. Instead of browsing by product category — lamps here, vases there — we wanted to make it easier to think about your home the way you actually live in it: room by room. Each space has its own rhythm, its own needs, its own mood. And the pieces you bring into it should reflect that.

We've put together five curated collections — Living Room, Bedroom, Dining Room, Balcony & Garden Terrace, and Home Office — each one built around how that room actually gets used. Here's a closer look at what's in each, and how to think about styling them.

Living Room: The Art of Layered Light and Quiet Presence

The living room is the room that does the most work. It's where you host, where you unwind, where you read, where you do nothing in particular. It needs to be flexible — warm and inviting in the evening, calm and functional during the day. And more than any other room in the house, it benefits from layered lighting.

Overhead lighting alone tends to flatten a space. What gives a living room depth and atmosphere is the combination of different light sources at different heights — a floor lamp in the corner, a table lamp on a side table, a wall lamp that throws a soft wash of light against a textured wall.

Our Living Room collection is built around exactly that idea. The Lyla Light Brown Wood & Glass Cordless Table Lamp is one of those pieces that earns its place quietly — the warm wood base and glass diffuser create a soft, even glow that works beautifully on a console table or beside a sofa. For something with more visual weight, the Bernice Black & Gold Tripod Floor Lamp brings a bit of drama to a corner without overwhelming the room, while the Korie Black Wire Mesh Floor Lamp is a more graphic option — the wire mesh casts interesting shadow patterns on the wall when lit.

For wall-mounted options, the Lou Walnut Cordless Rechargeable Wall Lamp has that warm, Scandinavian-adjacent quality — walnut and soft light, nothing fussy. The Tess Ocher Yellow Metal Cordless Wall Lamp brings a bit more personality with its ocher finish, which works particularly well against white or off-white walls. And if you want something with dual functionality, the Tessa Almond LED Dual-Head Floor Lamp is worth a look — two adjustable heads mean you can direct light exactly where you need it.

Don't overlook the decorative layer either. The Ulfur Ceramic Vase in Bronze to Black is one of those pieces that photographs beautifully but looks even better in person — the gradient finish catches the light differently depending on the time of day. Add a King Protea Bouquet in Bordeaux Mix and you have a vignette that feels genuinely considered. For greenery, the Faux Areca Palm in Large Green adds height and a tropical softness that works well in larger living rooms, while the Faux Monstera in Tall Green is a classic for good reason.

A few things to keep in mind when styling a living room: vary your heights, mix your materials, and resist the urge to match everything. A room where every piece coordinates perfectly tends to feel more like a catalogue than a home. The most interesting living rooms have a bit of tension — a rough texture next to something smooth, a dark piece next to something light.

Dining Room: Atmosphere Over Overhead Lighting

The dining room is one of the most underrated spaces in the home when it comes to atmosphere. Most people put a lot of thought into the table and the chairs, and then stop there. But the lighting and the decorative objects around the table are what actually determine how a meal feels — whether it's a quick weeknight dinner or a long Saturday evening with friends.

Candlelight is still one of the most effective tools for creating warmth at a dining table, and our Dining Room collection leans into that. The Mysore Antique Brass Metal & Glass Lantern works equally well with a real candle inside or as a standalone decorative object — the antique brass finish has that quality of looking like it's always been there. The Lucena Black Metal & Ribbed Glass Lantern is a more contemporary option, with ribbed glass that creates a beautiful texture when lit. For a simpler cluster effect, the Smoked Brown Glass Candle Holders in a Set of 3 and the White Cement Candle Holders in a Set of 2 are both easy ways to add warmth to a table center without much effort.

For electric light, the cordless table lamp has become one of the most useful pieces in a dining room — flexible enough to move, warm enough to set a mood. The Luca Mocha Brown Metal Cordless Table Lamp is a reliable choice: the mocha finish is neutral enough to work with most table settings. The Francesco Alabaster Cordless Table Lamp is a step up in terms of material presence — alabaster has a natural translucency that gives the light a particularly soft, diffused quality. And the Hugo Amber Yellow Metal Rechargeable Touch Table Lamp is worth considering if you want something with a bit of color — the amber finish glows beautifully in the evening.

On the decorative side, the Otaru Plate in Bronze-to-Black Ceramic and the Otaru S Sculptural Bowl are both pieces that work beautifully on a dining room sideboard — the gradient ceramic finish ties in naturally with warm wood tones. The San Marino Teak Waterdrop Decorative Display adds organic warmth, and the Cuzco White Speckled Ceramic Sculptural Vase is a lighter counterpoint if you want to balance darker pieces.

The key principle for dining room styling is to think about the table as a stage. Everything around it — the light, the objects on the sideboard, the pieces on the shelves — should support the atmosphere without distracting from the people sitting at it.

Bedroom: Calm Materials, Considered Light

The bedroom is the room where restraint pays off most. It's tempting to bring in too much — too many decorative objects, too many competing textures, too many light sources. But the rooms that actually feel restful tend to be the ones where someone made deliberate choices about what to leave out.

Bedside lighting in particular has a disproportionate impact on how a bedroom feels. A harsh overhead light is one of the worst things you can do to a bedroom. A warm, low lamp on each side of the bed changes everything.

The Lennart Light Brown Wood Cordless Table Lamp is one of our most popular bedroom pieces — the wood base is warm and tactile, the light output is soft and directional, and the cordless design means no cables across the nightstand. The Bodhi Dark Brown Wooden Table Lamp with Beige Linen Shade is a slightly more traditional option — the linen shade diffuses the light beautifully. For something with a different character, the Rover Chestnut Brown Rubberwood Cordless Table Lamp with Linen Shade has a warmer, more tactile quality, and the Rover Black Wood Linen Rechargeable Table Lamp is a darker, moodier version of the same idea.

For wall-mounted bedroom lighting, the Lou Black Rechargeable Cordless Wall Lamp is a clean, minimal option that frees up nightstand space entirely. And if you like to read in bed, the Fumoso Black Smoked Glass Gooseneck Floor Lamp allows you to direct light exactly where you need it without disturbing a partner.

On the decorative side, ceramics and natural materials tend to work best in bedrooms. The Earthline Tall Brown Ceramic Vase and the Terra Brown Ceramic Compact Vase are both pieces that add presence without noise — their matte finishes and earthy tones sit quietly in a space. The Touw Natural Jute Rope Floor Lamp bridges the gap between functional and decorative — the natural jute texture adds warmth and organic character that works particularly well in bedrooms with an earthy palette. For greenery, the Faux Monstera in Compact Green and the Faux Orchid in White are both low-maintenance options that add a living quality to the room.

When styling a bedroom, think about the room in two modes: daytime and evening. The pieces you choose should work in both. Natural light during the day, warm artificial light in the evening. Materials that look good in both conditions — ceramics, wood, linen, natural fibers — tend to be the safest choices.

Balcony & Garden Terrace: Outdoor Living That Doesn't Feel Like an Afterthought

The outdoor space is the room that most people underinvest in. It gets the leftover furniture, the pieces that didn't quite work inside, the things that were on sale. And then people wonder why they don't spend more time out there.

A balcony or garden terrace that's been properly considered — with the right lighting, the right plants, the right objects — becomes one of the most used spaces in the home, especially in the warmer months. It doesn't take much. A good lamp, a lantern, a plant stand. The difference between a balcony you walk past and one you actually sit on is often just a few well-chosen pieces.

Our Balcony & Garden Terrace collection is built around outdoor-rated cordless lamps that look genuinely beautiful — not like outdoor furniture, but like pieces you'd be happy to have inside too. The Tommy Wood Glass Rechargeable Table Lamp and the Max Wood Glass Cordless Table Lamp are both strong options for a dining table or side table on a terrace. The Fynn Glass Wooden Cordless Table Lamp has a slightly more refined quality — the glass and wood combination feels considered rather than purely functional. For smaller balconies, the Yce Mini Black Wood Glass Rechargeable Lamp is compact enough to sit on a narrow railing shelf without looking out of place.

Lanterns are another outdoor essential. The Herslev Antique Brass Metal & Glass Lantern has a classic quality that works in almost any outdoor setting — the antique brass develops a patina over time that actually improves with exposure to the elements. The Lohals Green Glass & Metal Lantern is a more contemporary option, with a green glass body that catches the light beautifully in the evening.

For structure and greenery, the Marla Plant Stand Set in Black Steel, Set of 2 allows you to create a layered plant display even on a small balcony. The Faux Olive Tree in Small Green adds height and a Mediterranean quality without worrying about watering schedules, and the Avery Wood Leather Rechargeable Table Lamp is worth mentioning — the leather detail makes it one of the more distinctive pieces in the outdoor collection.

The principle for outdoor styling is the same as for any other room: think about how the space will be used, and choose pieces that support that use. If you eat outside, you need table lighting. If you sit outside in the evening, you need ambient light. If you have plants, you need something to display them properly. Start with function, then add character.

Home Office: Focused Light, Calm Surroundings

The home office has become a permanent fixture in most households, and yet it's still one of the most neglected rooms when it comes to considered design. People spend eight or more hours a day in their home office and then wonder why they feel drained by the end of it. The environment you work in has a direct impact on how you think and how you feel — and lighting is one of the most significant variables.

Good task lighting — light that's directed, adjustable, and at the right color temperature — reduces eye strain and improves focus. But the home office also benefits from ambient light that makes the space feel less clinical. The combination of a good desk lamp and a floor lamp or table lamp in the background creates a working environment that's both functional and genuinely pleasant to be in.

Our Home Office collection starts with the desk lamp. The Marie Black Metal & Wood Desk Lamp and its counterpart in white are both strong starting points — the adjustable arm allows you to direct the light exactly where you need it, and the metal and wood combination gives them a quality that feels more considered than a standard office lamp. The David Black & Gold Rechargeable Table Lamp 2-in-1 is a versatile option that works both as a desk lamp and as a portable lamp you can move around — useful if your working setup changes throughout the day.

For ambient light, the Libby Brass & Amber Glass Table Lamp creates a particularly warm pool of light that works well in the background of a video call as much as in person. The Maron Taupe & Nickel Table Lamp is a quieter option — understated enough to disappear into the room while still doing its job. The Stelo Black & Gold Smoked Glass Table Lamp is a more graphic choice if you prefer something with a stronger visual presence on the desk.

For floor lamps, the Stelo Black & Brass Smoked Glass Floor Lamp adds height and visual interest to a home office corner. The Modo Black & Gold Minimalist Floor Lamp is a cleaner, more pared-back option. And the Touw Natural Jute Rope Floor Lamp — which also appears in the Bedroom collection — is worth considering here too: in a room full of hard surfaces and screens, a piece made from natural materials provides a visual rest that's more useful than it might sound.

When thinking about home office lighting, color temperature matters more than most people realize. Cooler light (around 4000K) supports focus and alertness during working hours. Warmer light (around 2700K) is better for winding down. If you can, choose lamps with adjustable color temperature — or at least be intentional about which lamps you use at which times of day.

How to Use the By-Room Collections

The room-based collections aren't meant to be prescriptive. You don't need to buy everything in the Living Room collection to have a good living room, and pieces from one collection will often work beautifully in another. The Tess wall lamp appears in both Living Room and Balcony for exactly that reason. The Touw floor lamp shows up in Bedroom, Balcony, and Home Office. The Bernice tripod floor lamp works in both the Living Room and the Home Office.

What the collections are meant to do is give you a starting point — a curated set of pieces that we know work well together in a particular context, chosen with that room's specific needs in mind. From there, the combinations are yours to make.

A few general principles that apply across all five rooms:

Layer your light. No single light source does everything well. A combination of ambient, task, and accent lighting gives you flexibility and depth that a single overhead fixture never can.

Mix your materials. Rooms that use only one material — all wood, all metal, all ceramic — tend to feel flat. The most interesting spaces combine materials in ways that create contrast and texture.

Leave room to breathe. More is not always more. A few well-chosen pieces with space around them will almost always look better than a crowded shelf or a table covered in objects.

Think about the room at night. Most rooms are styled in daylight and then used in the evening. Make sure the pieces you choose — especially the lighting — work in both conditions.

The by-room collections are live now on dwelly.nl. Each collection page includes all the pieces we've curated for that space, and we'll be adding to them as new pieces arrive. If you're not sure where to start, the Living Room collection is a good entry point — it covers the widest range of pieces and gives a good sense of the overall Dwelly aesthetic.
