Otaru Plate Bronze-to-Black Ceramic Decorative Plate

The Otaru Plate is the most expansive canvas in the collection — a large, flat form that invites the eye to slow down and take in the full depth of the glaze. Wide and grounded, it carries the same Song Dynasty-inspired bronze feet as the rest of the Otaru family, but here the surface becomes the centerpiece: a mineral glaze made from natural ore, kiln-fired at 1360°C, that transitions from warm, luminous bronze at the rim to a deep, lustrous black at the centre.

The effect is quietly mesmerizing. Displayed flat on a console or coffee table, the plate reads like a pool of dark water catching the light. Leaned upright against a wall or on a shelf, it becomes a sculptural object of considerable presence — graphic, considered, and entirely singular.

Part of the Otaru series designed by SUNs, winner of the Red Dot Award, and selected for the Innovation Competition at Maison&Objet 2022. The clay body is high-grade Chinese stoneware — the same material used in traditional teapot making — chosen for its density, tactile warmth, and ability to withstand extreme firing temperatures. Over a year of R&D with ceramic experts was required to perfect the glaze.

Style it flat with a smooth stone or dried botanical inside, or lean it upright as a standalone decorative object. It works equally well as a centrepiece on a dining table, a statement on a console, or a considered addition to a shelf composition.
